چکیده

Dynamic networks exhibit temporal patterns that vary across different time scales, all of which can potentially affect processes that take place on the network. However, most data-driven approaches used to model timevarying networks attempt to capture only a single characteristic time scale in isolation — typically associated with the short-time memory of a Markov chain or with long-time abrupt changes caused by external or systemic events. Here we propose a unified approach to model both aspects simultaneously, detecting short and longtime behaviors of temporal networks. We do so by developing an arbitrary-order mixed Markov model with change points, and using a nonparametric Bayesian formulation that allows the Markov order and the position of change points to be determined from data without overfitting. In addition, we evaluate the quality of the multiscale model in its capacity to reproduce the spreading of epidemics on the temporal network, and we show that describing multiple time scales simultaneously has a synergistic effect, where statistically significant features are uncovered that otherwise would remain hidden by treating each time scale independently.

How memory generates heterogeneous dynamics in temporal networks

Empirical temporal networks display strong heterogeneities in their dynamics, which profoundly affect processes taking place on these networks, such as rumor and epidemic spreading. Despite the recent wealth of data on temporal networks, little work has been devoted to the understanding of how such heterogeneities can emerge from microscopic mechanisms at the level of nodes and links. Here we s...

Burstiness and spreading on temporal networks

We discuss how spreading processes on temporal networks are impacted by the shape of their inter-event time distributions. Through simple mathematical arguments and toy examples, we find that the key factor is the ordering in which events take place, a property that tends to be affected by the bulk of the distributions and not only by their tail, as usually considered in the literature. We show...

Concurrency-induced transitions in epidemic dynamics on temporal networks

Social contact networks underlying epidemic processes in humans and animals are highly dynamic. The spreading of infections on such temporal networks can differ dramatically from spreading on static networks. We theoretically investigate the effects of concurrency, the number of neighbors that a node has at a given time point, on the epidemic threshold in the stochastic susceptible-infected-sus...

Epidemic Spreading in Non-Markovian Time-Varying Networks

Most real networks are characterized by connectivity patterns that evolve in time following complex, non-Markovian, dynamics. Here we investigate the impact of this ubiquitous feature by studying the Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) and Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible (SIS) epidemic models on activity driven networks with and without memory (i.e., Markovian and non-Markovian). We show that...

Memory effects on epidemic evolution: The susceptible-infected-recovered epidemic model.

Memory has a great impact on the evolution of every process related to human societies. Among them, the evolution of an epidemic is directly related to the individuals' experiences. Indeed, any real epidemic process is clearly sustained by a non-Markovian dynamics: memory effects play an essential role in the spreading of diseases. Including memory effects in the susceptible-infected-recovered ...
